For Glaucoma Awareness Month 2026, take it as a gentle reminder to look after your future vision and check in on someone you care about, too. Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, so it can go unnoticed for years.

This isn’t meant to spark fear. The point is simple: know what glaucoma is, know who should pay closer attention, and get the type of eye exam that can catch it early.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the part of your eye that sends visual information to your brain. Over time, that damage can lead to vision loss or blindness. In the U.S., glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness, and globally, it is often cited as the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Why Many People Don’t Notice It Early

Glaucoma can feel “invisible” at first. Many people have no early symptoms, especially with open-angle glaucoma, the most common type. That’s why a diagnosis can come as a surprise.

About 50% of people with glaucoma don’t know it’s there. Once vision is lost from glaucoma, it can’t be restored, which is why early detection matters.

How Common Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma isn’t rare. The CDC reports more than 3 million Americans have glaucoma, and that number is projected to rise to 6.3 million by 2050 as the U.S. population ages.

It also carries a real cost: the CDC estimates glaucoma costs the U.S. economy about $2.86 billion per year through direct costs and productivity losses.

Who Should Take Glaucoma Awareness Month 2026 Personally?

Anyone can get glaucoma, but some people have a higher risk. The National Eye Institute highlights higher risk for people who are:

Over age 60 (especially if Hispanic/Latino)

African American and over age 40

Someone with a family history of glaucoma

Family history matters. Research reviews suggest first-degree relatives (parent, sibling, child) can have about a 9× higher risk than people without that close family link. If you’re unsure where you fall, start with one question this month: “Has anyone in our family had glaucoma?”

What You Can Do This Month

1) Book The Right Kind Of Eye Exam

The National Eye Institute recommends a comprehensive dilated eye exam to check for glaucoma. If you already see an eye doctor, check when your last dilated exam happened and schedule the next one.

2) Go In Prepared

A little prep makes the visit smoother:

Bring your current glasses/contacts prescription (or have it on your phone).

List any eye drops or medicines you use.

Share any family eye history you know. Even “I’m not sure” helps guide the conversation.

3) Share A Reminder With Someone You Care About

Awareness spreads fastest person-to-person. Here’s a ready text you can send:

“It’s Glaucoma Awareness Month 2026. Glaucoma can start with no early symptoms, so a dilated eye exam is how it’s found early. If it’s been a while since your last eye exam, January is a good time to book one.”

4) Know The “Go Now” Symptoms

Most glaucoma is slow. A less common type, acute angle-closure glaucoma, can come on suddenly and needs urgent care.

Get emergency help if you have sudden, severe eye pain, a bad headache, blurred vision, halos around lights, a red eye, or nausea/vomiting.

5) Don’t Let “I See Fine” Talk You Out Of Caring

Clear vision today doesn’t tell the full story. Glaucoma awareness is about protecting what you can’t check at home, especially when the early stages can feel normal.

A January Reminder Worth Sharing

Glaucoma Awareness Month 2026 is a good time to take a small step that can protect your vision long-term. If it has been a while since your last comprehensive dilated eye exam, book one and put it on the calendar.

If someone in your life is older or has a family history of glaucoma, send a quick reminder. One message can be the push that helps someone get checked before vision changes show up.

FacebookLinkedin

References+

Glaucoma Awareness Month.
